The Rampion Offshore Windfarm Project

The MPI Discovery  & The Pacific Orca.

On the 16th July 2014 the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change gave a Development Consent Order in respect of the Rampion Offshore Windfarm.

Initial Offshore construction works commenced in January 2016 with the start of the installation of the 116 Monopole Foundations & Transition Bases and this was expected to continue until the end of the year but due to a summer of fine weather they finished all 116 Bases by the end of November.

Work on the Rampion Offshore Windfarm is now due to start again around Mid-March and the next stage of the construction the installation of the Wind Turbines and Blades being fitted to the Bases, The cable instalation is well underway as well and all this work is due to be completed by 2018.

.               Rampion Windfarm & Offshore Sub Station.

The Offshore Sub Station is where all the cables from the Wind Turbines come together linking up and joining the export cables that run to the shoreline near Worthing and then on to the National Grid. When finished there will be over 75miles of cables buried meters beneath the seabed.

When we leave for the Rampion Offshore Windfarm visit we will depart Brighton Marina and make our way South West towards one of the Cardinal Buoys that mark the perimeter of the Rampion Offshore Windfarm.

We will see lots of different Construction Vessels & Work Boats that are operating in and around the Rampion Windfarm Area so we need to inform the Guard Vessels that we are about to enter the Construction Site and that we are doing a tour.

We will get fairly close to the working ships whilst still maintaining a safe working distance.

MPI Offshore’s jack-up vessel MPI Discovery installed the first of the 116 3.45MW MHI Vestas wind turbines at the 400MW Rampion offshore wind farm off Sussex in the early morning hours of Friday, 10 March 2017.

The installations are set to continue throughout 2017 & probably into 2018.

MPI Discovery is transporting the components for eight turbines in each trip from Esbjerg in Denmark to the Rampion site, off the Sussex coast. Weather dependent, each turbine will take around 24 hours to install from initial positioning at each turbine location and jacking of the vessel.

During spring, offshore cabling work will continue at the site. An elevated excavator will be working from Lancing Beach over an estimated eight week period, to backfill the cable duct trenches that were dug along the seabed last year, for the cable installation. The vehicle will work in calm conditions around the changing tide at a water depth of up to three meters.

The offshore substation that transforms the electricity up to 150 kilovolts before transporting it to shore, was lifted into position onto its foundation in middle of April 2017.

Onshore construction of the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) base at Newhaven Port will commence in March. The O&M base will include offices and warehousing and will employ up to 60 full time, permanent staff and store spare parts and tools to support the maintenance of the turbines. The Pacific Osprey arrived in the Windfarm to start work on the Substation on Sunday 14th May.

.       C-bed’s flotel Wind Solution has arrived off the Sussex Coast to provide offshore accommodation for the crews currently working on the 400MW Rampion offshore wind farm.

Rampion is the first ever offshore wind farm in Southern Britain and despite a relatively short distance of 13 kilometres from the coast, providing offshore accommodation throughout the commissioning phase is the preferred solution of the wind farm operator, The flotel features 100 single cabins and can provide accommodation for up to 115 persons.

C-bed will be using Portsmouth as the base port for crew changes and loading of fresh supplies.

Crew Transfer Vessels transport the work force from Newhaven, Brighton Marina & Shoreham Harbour to the many work locations within the Windfarm Area also too & from the Offshore Accommodation platforms, these work vessels travel at high speeds so great care must be taken when travelling throughout the windfarm area.

The wind farm is being built off the Sussex coast by E.ON, the UK Green Investment Bank plc and Canadian energy company Enbridge

The project is due to be completed and fully operational by June 2018.

Unfortunately whilst installing the 2 export cables the fibre optics were damaged beyond repair therefore a 3 cable has had to be installed in August 2017.
